Additionally, it had to be challenging enough to help them retain the memory of the word’s spelling and formation. It needed to have enough scaffolding that they could do the work on their own. I decided to create a resource where students could independently practice their sight words to gain mastery. Phonics should always be the main focus of reading instruction, but it’s important to give students exposure to sight words. However, you would teach the word “the.” Sounding out the word “the” won’t lead you to the correct pronunciation. In recent years there has been a push from the Science of Reading advocates to only teach true sight words that can’t easily be decoded.įor instance, you wouldn’t teach the word “am” because it can be sounded out. Some schools/districts come up with their own combination of words as well. Many language arts curriculums have their own list of sight words. On both top 100 lists, there are 130 words with 70 of them being on both lists. Both of these lists were created based on the most frequently occurring words in the English language. The two most common sight word lists to use are either Fry or Dolch. When writing, students should sound out words to make a sentence, but sight words that have been taught should be spelled correctly. The goal with sight words is to have the students automatically recognize the words by themselves, and within a sentence. After that, they are reinforced in small groups. Sight words are usually taught during whole group instruction. Instead, you need to use Verse or Zen, where I have the blue and purple arrows.Sight word practice can be challenging, especially in kindergarten! To cement the recognition and spelling of sight words into students’ memory they need lots of varied practice. You can not create your own words for this section of the game. Osmo pushed out a great upgrade to the app which is called Adventure. How to Play a Created Fry Sight Word Activities on Osmo Since mastery is important, if my students were working on Fry 300, I could choose if I wanted them to work on Fry 100 and Fry 2oo words as well. They go to the table I tell them and they play a game with the words they are working on. Then, I put the activity those students were working towards mastering on the device they needed to work on. I set an Osmo up at each table since I have 6 Osmo bases. My students were either working on Fry 100, Fry 200, Fry 300, or Fry 400. First, I divide my students by which sight word list they are working on. It is easy to differentiate activities using the installed activities on Osmo. How to Differentiated with Fry Sight Words You can select one activity or more than one! The red arrows show you the games selected to be played. Let me show you how I use this to meet all my students’ needs. My students LOVE playing Osmo Words, but I didn’t have Fry lists on Osmo to play. My solution was to create Fry sight word activities as a form of differentiated activities for my students. When our students master all their Dolch sight words, we move them onto Fry Lists. They run around on Osmo’s website in kits or on their own and on Amazon in kits as well. They can be found on Osmo’s website or on Amazon. You do need to have an Osmo iPad base ($30) or iPhone ($20) base. Most of my words revolve around Dolch Sight words and match my Sight Word Station activities. You can read more about that here!
